TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It is a welfare program created in 1996 that replaced Aid to Families and Dependent Children (AFDC). TANF is designed to help needy families achieve self sufficiency. This map presents total number of TANF recipients (adults and children) and percentage of state population.
