More than 70 million primary school-aged children do not go to school, and 55 percent of them are girls. Female literacy is considerably lower where poverty rates are high. In the Sitamarhi District of India, almost two-thirds of the population is living below the poverty line. About 25 per cent of female residents are literate, far below the state and national levels.
